This is a week for the Woo Hoo books! For most of the crew, we are running between 3 or 4 events this week and kicked it all off with the Freedom Run 10K on June 30th in Greensboro.
For those that haven’t run the Freedom Run, the course definitely has it’s challenges. It starts in downtown Greensboro and goes into both the Irving Park and Fisher Park neighborhoods. When people say this is a hilly course, they aren’t joking!
As usual, we met up about an hour before the race to get geared up and decorated for the race. Ribbons were tied, bibs were pinned, and pictures were taken. And, because we were super lucky, some of our good buddies, the Sole Sisters met up with us as well! By the time we were approached the start we were all ready to take on the heat and hills!
Now would be a good time to mention that while they have all done longer races, this was the first 10K for Daniel, Carole, Bonnie, and Lauren.
Daniel went into the race feeling great! With his current running streak at over 180 days, he felt extremely well-prepared. After his first mile he felt great, so he kept pushing and wound up with a spectacular finish time of 52:15! Not bad for a first 10K outing!
Nathan had ambitions of at least matching his time from last year, but the heat made that a little challenging. He’s been running this race (one of his faves) since 2008 with an inaugural finish time of 1:01. He’s gradually shaved that down to this year’s time of 49:08:56 (40 seconds slower than last year). Fingers crossed for awesomely cool weather in 2013!
For Melanie W, Katie, Bonnie, Carole, and Lauren, this was a race all about the fun! With it being a super hot day, they decided it was a great time to do a race together. We walked some, ran some, played in sprinklers, took pictures, and acted, in general, like gigantic jackasses, taking some great mile marker pictures. Melanie and Katie really enjoyed being able to support Carole, Bonnie and Lauren as they ran their first 10K.
Other Notable Woo Hoo Finishes
Ralph – 51:11
Mel J – 55:10
Bekah – 56:05
Jennifer – 23:33 in the 2-miler (Jennifer’s first ever race!!!)
Next on the WHC agenda was the Kernersville Rotary Club’s 4th of July 5K. The crowd support on this race is awesome, as the 5K follows the same route as the parade that comes after the race. There is nothing better than seeing everyone dressed in their patriotic gear, cheering and clapping as you run. Although the course is pretty flat for Kernersville, mostly rolling hills, the lack of shade takes a toll on the runners who travel down E./W. Mountain Street for an out and back.
Melanie W went into this race with only one goal…to try and beat her time from last year. With the heat and the humidity yesterday, she was afraid that might be more difficult than she originally thought. For Melanie, this was her first 5K ever where she didn’t have to do mad intervals at the end because she had completely worn herself out by the end of the race. She stayed in her head the whole race, not letting other external factors try to rattle her, as was the attempt. She kept with the plan that she made before the race to achieve her goal, and ran a negative split the last mile, mission accomplished! New course PR!
Nathan, again, had his sights on his PR from last year, but wasn’t totally feeling it. He still finished with a totally respectable 22:42 finish.
Katie knew going into this race that beating last year’s time wasn’t really an option. With the heat and humidity, she was sure her asthma would be a factor. She managed to have a great first mile, finishing it in 9:18. Her recovery times in the 2nd mile got longer, but my the third mile, she felt better and managed to complete the run in 32:39.
The most wonderful part of this race is the fact that this is an out and back course. Normally, we aren’t a big fan of those, but in this race, it really seemed to matter. It was great to see each other out on the course and feel the love and support from fellow WHC members as we passed each other along the way. That is the best part of being a Woo Hoo: the support, fun, and love we all have for each other. WOO HOO!
