Saturday was one of the fullest days in recent Woo Hoo Crew history. It all started with Matt’s 10K Run to Fight Hunger, which we’ll post about later this week. In typical WHC fashion, food followed at the Wright house – a decadent brunch (filled with blueberry-stuffed french toast, fruit salad, assorted meats, egg casserole and, of course, spicy bloody marys) shared with a few of the lovely Sole Sisters and their spouses. We took the party to the pool, ingested loads of chips, watermelon, and (perhaps) more adult beverages.
After that, what’s left to do other than go run a 5K relay on a track in 93-degree heat?!
And that’s just what Daniel, Melanie W, & I set out to do – the 2nd Annual Fire on the Track 5,000! This race (one of the cheapest around at $10 for individuals and $12 for relay teams + an awesome t-shirt) was made up of three heats – the first for runners/walkers with projected finishing times of 19:00+ for men and 21:00+ for women; the second, the championship heat, for sub-19:00 and sub-21:00 runners; and the 3rd, the 3-person relay heat. It was organized extremely well and featured some of the fastest runners in the state, including Devin Swann (who set a new course record with a 15:08 finish), Greensboro’s own Rich Swor, and Molly Nunn.
The Woo Hoo Crew made up one of the six coed relay teams. After such a sun, fun, & food/drink-filled day, we didn’t know quite what to expect out of ourselves other than putting our best foot forward (so to speak).
Daniel started us off by running the one 1.1-mile leg (nearly 4-1/2 laps around the track) with a smokin’ pace of 6:18/mile. This was the fastest mile he had run since high school (or ever…he couldn’t remember). Melanie ran the anchor leg and killed it with a 7:32/mile pace – her fastest mile to date! I finished us off with 6:10/mile pace – about 10 seconds slower than my fastest mile, but I’m not complaining.
Each time we talk about this race, we feel like we have to talk about how much we ate, drank, swam, laid in the hot sun, and so on. However, we finished in 21:22 and 3rd in our division. Take all of the earlier shenanigans out of th equation and we still showed up and burned up that track! Special thanks to Katie, Christie, & Amy for coming to cheer us on. So nice to see such lovely ladies at the start of each lap. We will, without a doubt, be returning to this race next year and we’ll be bringing reinforcements!
